‘Can’t imagine you’d want to visit Papa in prison, would you?’ Della said, lip curled. ‘Perhaps you won’t even feel the need to come back to this house and sully yourself again. It’s not fun, I admit, going to visit someone who’s regarded as a traitor, a Quisling. Last time, I hid behind that veil. But why pretend I’m not the daughter of the man holed up with criminals?’ Della’s lips quivered and her eyes welled. She wiped her hand across her eyes and her face reset itself so rigidly, she looked ten years older. Lucia’s heart broke for her. She put a hand out.

‘Della…’

Della pulled back, out of reach. Without another word, she opened the passenger door and got in, the taxi pulling away before Lucia could say another word.

Lucia stood on the pavement, feeling a chunk of her heart vanish with the taxi as it turned a corner. She waited for a moment, as if hoping it would double back. The front door of the house closed behind them. Hope looked up at her inquisitively.
